Cadistas, the name given to fans of Cadiz CF, are considered the friendliest and most jovial fans in Spain. To them, the occasion is often more important than the result, as highlighted by the famous Cadista chant: "Alcohol alcohol alcohol, hemos venido a emborracharnos el resultado nos da igual!" translating - "Alcohol alcohol alcohol, we came here to get drunk and the result doesn't matter!"
This does not hold true when Cadiz face Sevilla in an Andalusian derby. Just like any derby, there is great rivalry between the neighbors and alcohol takes secondary importance in the pecking order, because in this game the result really does matter.
Cadiz were without injured duo Berizzo and Sesma. In came de Quintana at center back and right midfielder Dani Navarrete at left midfield. There was also a start for Varela at right back, replacing Velasquez.
Raul Lopez continued at left back and Oliveira stuck with the attacking trio of Pavoni, Estoyanoff and Mirosavljevic as he kept his diamond formation which brought victory against Toulouse.
Sevilla lined up in a 4-4-2 formation featuring 2 defensive midfielders and two widemen. Javier Saviola, perhaps the best player in the division, started upfront alongside Jesuli.
Strangely for a derby the game started slowly, as if the teams were feeling each other out. Things soon picked up though and after nine minutes Cadiz won a freekick in a dangerous position. Fleurquin took responsibility and demanded a flying save from Andres Palop in the Sevilla goal. Sevilla responded with a long shot which went narrowly over and a free-kick of their own which Armando had to tip over the bar. The game was now end-to-end. In the next meaningful attack Raul Lopez did well on the left before crossing onto the head of Mirosavljevic. The Serbian got plenty of power into his header but unfortunately it was too close to Palop, who nevertheless needed excellent reflexes to keep it out. Soon after it was Sevilla's turn to threaten as Armando had to rush out to save at the feet of Jesuli. Mirosavljevic tried his luck from distance just before the half came to a close.
If 0-0 was a surprising half time scoreline, it didn't stay that way for long. Just 5 minutes into the 2nd half, Sevilla captain Marti showed excellent chest control to take a dropping ball into the box. Cutting onto his right foot his effort was sneaking into the near post. Armando managed to get fingers on it but could only divert it onto the post. Jesuli was alive to the rebound and poked home to give Sevilla the lead.
The goal forced Cadiz to become more offensive. Cheered on by unwavering support Cadiz took the game to Sevilla in search of an equaliser. It should have come when Enrique escaped in the inside right channel. His shot was well saved but the loose ball fell to Navarrete just about at the penalty spot. with little pressure and an open goal he got his shot all wrong and it sailed harmlessly over.
With 4 minutes left, Cadiz produced the best move of the whole game as quick passing between Mirosavljevic and Oli released Navarrete to make amends for his horror miss. Palop did well to narrow the angle quickly and foiled Cadiz' best last chance for a draw.
Sevilla held on for the 1-0 victory to bounce back from last week's shock home defeat. Cadiz manager Oliveira was left disappointed but optimistic, "Of course it hurts getting beaten in a derby game, especially at home. The result was all important but the performance was great. They are everyone's favorites for promotion and we matched them all over the park and deserved at least a draw. We'll pick ourselves up and go again next week."
